Area Info For Property Turkey

The bustling and popular resort of FETHIYE, situated on the Mediterranean coast 45 minutes drive from Dalaman airport, A large Marina at the head of a beatiful bay strewn with islands. A hill crowned by the ruins of a crusader castle built by the Knights of Rhodes overlooks the little port. Above the town, numerous Lycian rock tombs, are cut into the cliff face, the most remarkable being the tomb of the King Amyntas, which probably dates from the fourth century B.C..

Today Fethiye is a thriving Turkish town, where fishermen can still be seen mending their nets on the harbour front, next to luxury yachts taking advantage of the good - and soon to be greatly-extended - marina facilities. The surrounding area is one of outstanding natural beauty and abundance, and the rural economy is based on citrus fruit, olives and tomatoes. Apart from the beauty and history, Fethiye has become popular as a holiday destination thanks to its wonderful climate, tranquil waters (perfect for all sorts of water sports) and is also great for shopping.

Despite these attractions, Fethiye has managed to maintain much of its flavour as a busy small Turkish town - and is not solely a holiday resort. This is probably part of the reason that it is now becoming popular as a place of retirement and ‘escape’ for an increasing number of British people. They are also drawn by the mild winters, low cost of living, and of course - the friendly locals!
As Fethiye is based along a harbour, the neighbouring CALIS BEACH is the nearest place to swim. Four kilometers west of town, and easily reachable by bus or (in summer) boat taxi, the beach offers safe swimming and is cooled by a welcome breeze through the summer. The beach is fronted by a row of hotels, restaurants and bars offering a wide choice of places to watch the sun set spectacularly behind the islands.

As Fethiye has developed, so Calis has answered the call for new housing, and as land prices tend to be lower, there are fewer apartments and more detached and semi-detached villas here. There are also some very attractive developments with on-site facilities (pools, sports areas, maintained gardens) that are especially suited to those looking for a holiday home. The other well-known beach in the area is that at OLU DENIZ the lagoon beach featured on the cover of nearly every Turkey brochure. An amazingly beautiful beach with its bright turquoise water, tranquil lagoon and towering mountains behind, it is however relatively given over to tourism and the opportunities for buying or building residential property there are few
.

However, just above the beach on a plateau among those mountains are the villages of HISARONU and OVACIK. These offer a wide range of properties, but particularly villas, and some land still available for building purposes. Close to these, but with a much different feel is the village of KAYA ( Ghost Town ) - home of the deserted Greek town of Karmilassos. This is a peaceful agricultural plain, where most property is renovated stone houses, or newer properties built to match the same style. Strict building regulations have limited growth, and while it can be harder to purchase property here, several British families have taken the step and enjoy the amazing peace and beauty of the village. Another increasingly popular location for those looking to be away from the town is UZUMLU( Cadianda ).

Situated about 15km from Fethiye centre, it lies on a high plateau with surrounding mountains (snow-capped in winter) and acres of almond trees. There is a selection of new propeties and small developments that have been built over the last few years. But as a largely undeveloped area, Uzümlü offers the opportunity to purchase land relatively cheaply and so is an ideal site for building the ‘house of your dreams’
